This is my first semester in advanced ceramics. I took beginner ceramics last semester and learned the basics of hand projects, throwing, footing, and glazing. The theme I have chosen is glazing and techniques of glazing. In my first semester of ceramics I found glazing a boring and annoying and did not realize the importance it had for the project. This semester I started to pay more attention to how I glazed and with what glazes I used.
How I made my theme possible was comparing and contrasting the glazes available and either overlapping, mixing, dripping, spraying, brushing, dunking the projects or using raku for an appealing appearance. When on the wheel I consider the shape I’m making and how the glazes will run against its features and shape, then I have it fired. Once out of the bisque kiln, I think out what glazes will compliment the project and toss around ideas of how I will apply the glaze.
I chose this theme because glazing is a major factor that contributes to the project and this year is my favorite part in the process of making art. The glazes expressed through my theme expose progression in each assignment. The more I had experience with the wheel as well as glazing the more I appreciated ceramics and discovered how creative I can be, and how many options I have.
